Opportunity to participate in Geographic Information Systems

August 14, 2023

Want to be a part of the technical committee responsible for computer-based tools used to store, visualize, analyze, and interpret geographic data related to positions on Earth’s surface?  INCITS/Geographic Information Systems (GIS) helps define all things geographic from the location of fire hydrants within a given city to how a location can impact diseases.

Individuals and organizations use GIS to answer data-related questions.  Most information contains a location reference that helps with understanding spatial patterns and relationships.  The data that’s collected in these systems may include information such as the population, amount of stop signs, or vegetation within a given area.  GIS allows individuals and organizations to compare the locations of different things in discovery on how they relate to each other.

Within industries from agriculture to public health, GIS helps us understand “what is where” and “how it impacts our world”.  Join us in our quest to standardize the field of digital GIS!

Interested in getting involved in the standardization activities mentioned above and others related to Geographic Information Systems? learn more information on membership in INCITS Geographic Information Systems here.

INCITS/Geographic Information Systems strives for standardization in the field of digital geospatial information. The committee aims to establish a structured set of standards for information concerning objects or phenomena that involve direct or indirect association with a location relative to the Earth, enabling the analysis of planetary spatial relationships, with an emphasis on planet Earth. For more information about the work being done in this area, visit the committee.
