Latest Release of ISO/IEC 14882, Programming languages – C++ Under Development

INCITS/C++ is participating in the final stages of development of C++23, the 7th version of the ISO C++ standard.

The use of C++ has grown steadily since its initial release by Bjarne Stroustrup and AT&T Bell Labs in 1985. For the last three decades it has consistently been amongst the top 5 most used programming languages, with a current developer population on the order of 6 million. It is dominant in areas where performance and control of complexity are paramount, such as finance, games, graphics, animation, large embedded systems, aerospace, and areas of scientific computation. C++ is widely used for software infrastructure such as browsers and demanding Web applications (e.g., Google, Amadeus, and Facebook). The major operating systems are partly built using C++, for example, Mac Os, Windows, Linux, etc. Major credit for this extraordinary success goes to the philosophy of continuous evolution embedded in the C++ ISO C++ standard committee that has, since 2011, produced  a new standard every three years, and the next update is planned for 2026.

C++23 is expected to be published shortly. A list of the new features and changes in C++23 can be requested.

INCITS/C++, the technical committee that is the U.S. mirror group to the international ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 22/WG 21 committee, that is responsible for the technical development of the standard for the C++ programming language.
